 Specialty Focus for Women's Individualized Sessions

Interested in women's issues from the start of her body health studies, Gretchen took "extra" elective women's health courses as a part of her nursing curriculum.

The two topics most on Gretchen's heart for women are weight loss and the area of hormones for all stages of a woman's life.  Even though Gretchen could wear size 4 earlier in her life, at one point she ended up close to 300 lbs. while experiencing adrenal burnout, low thyroid function, overall disharmonious hormones, clouded thought processes, digestive system challenges, body inflammation, and debilitating joint pain along with various health issues.

Understanding the varying mechanisms of how a woman's body works is crucial for all areas of our health.  For example, women produce half the amount of serotonin that men do and produce twice the amount of cortisol under stress as compared to men.  For many middle aged women, their serotonin levels begin to greatly decrease.  Also, high stress leading to high cortisol creates a hightened response within a brain structure known as the amygdala causing subtle signs of irrational worry, over-reacting to "perceived" threats, a tendency to feel irritable with loved ones, decreased flexibility and an inability to connect to inner joy.  Yet, there are alternative wellness strategies to restore the brain's electromagnetic (or energy) balance, bring the body back into a state of harmonious connection, support emotional balance and decrease the effects of stress.

Antidepressants have anywhere between seventy to five hundred possible adverse reactions and forty percent of Caucasions are born with the short serotonin transporter gene causing them to be less resilient to stress, prone to cortisol imbalances, and experience a decreased response to the benefits of depression medications.  Yet, alternative wellness techniques and exercises offer support to the body's abililty to balance oxytocin while enabling us to tap into experiencing inner joy.

 For women, hormonal imbalances is one of the top reasons for accelerated aging.  These imbalances also influence brain function, body wellness, stress coping, and weight management.  Even though blarring signs of hormonal imbalance is often times not recognized until near menopause, women actual begin to struggle remaining hormonally balanced in their twenties.  

Also, Alzheimer's disease has been linked to high cortisol levels. Between the ages of fifty and eighty-five cortisol levels continue to increase by 20 percent.  According to the Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services, half of the people diagnosed with depression actually have high cortisol levels.  Because high cortisol increases body inflammation, prolonged exposure to high cortisol constricts blood flow to the brain, decreases emotional intelligence, and accelerates a decrease in cognitive function.  Yet, alternative wellness therapies also offers exercises, techniques and protocols to assist the body to finding it's own way to body & mind balance once again.
